A Look Back

June 9, 2020

In lieu of a end-of-year Open Forum, we would like to offer you a quick look at this past year...

This has been an unprecedented time in our school’s history.  We stand facing so much uncertainty caused by the tumult of COVID over the past few months, followed by the challenging and distressing social unrest of the last few weeks.  As PTO leaders, we don’t know what next year will allow/bring. What we do know is that despite this highly unusual year, our school community has so many positive moments that we can reflect on as our 8th graders prepare to graduate and the rest of our students participate in their last week of virtual learning together.  Let’s name a few…

  • Celebratory “Back-to-School” Gathering in September;

  • Community-organized luncheon and “random acts of kindness days" to celebrate our teachers and staff;

  • Fabulous & fun BINGO Night;

  • Powerful beginnings to important parent discussions about cultural identity at our November Open Forum, and last week’s critical conversation about racism;

  • Open Forum opportunity to hear from current Lincoln-Sudbury High School students about their transition from the Brooks School into high school;

  • Amazing and inspiring first-ever Book Swap.

And let’s not forget all of the Enrichment Programs that our students were able to enjoy, both in-person and virtually…

  • Creative writing and poetry workshops

  • Meteorology weather workshops

  • Math, science and nature programs

  • Cultural discussions, such as Daniel Mathiang Bul's sharing of his personal history in the context of civil war and conflict in North and South Sudan

  • Visit from a nationally-renowned puppeteer

  • Visit to Drumlin Farm

  • Model U.N.

  • And so many more…scroll through the pages of event descriptions on our website (https://www.lpto.org)

And then there are the critical community-building and enrichment efforts of our METCO Coordinating Committee (MCC..a 50+ year old organization with a rich history in Lincoln; it’s own 501(c)3 organization, but strategically aligned with the PTO)…

  • Summer camp program scholarships and transportation for over 25 Boston-based students

  • Community conversations about “Talking to your Children about Racism” through partnership with First Parish Church

  • After school enrichment programming for METCO students (e.g. lego robotics)

  • Creative and highly-profitable estate sale fundraising

  • Continuing lunch assistance program for families (through the summer) in partnership with First Parish

  • Continued partnership with METCO Program Director and School Administration to educate teachers, students and families about racism

All of these social and enrichment opportunities resulted from the organizational efforts of volunteers, the generous donations of so many of our families, and the strategic partnerships that the PTO has with organizations such as our school METCO Program and the MCC .  We extend our virtual applause and heart-filled thanks to all of the individuals who have donated their time, heart and money to our PTO and MCC this year!

A very special thanks to three individuals who are “retiring” from the PTO Core Team this year: Liz Lieblich, Toni O’Connor and Christine Pillar.  All three have dedicated themselves to the PTO for years, serving not only as key members of the core team in recent years, but also serving as room parents, classroom volunteers, BINGO night helpers, sub-committee members…the list goes on and on.  We thank all three of you for bringing your hearts, minds and skills to the PTO table!

 With gratitude and wishes for a wonderful, safe and fun summer ahead,

Preditta Cedeno and Pilar Doughty (current PTO Co-Chairs)

Rob Stringer (PTO Co-Chair Nominee for next year)

Michelle Barnes (MCC President)
